What A Day For A Day Dream
Just imagine leaning back with your head supported in a warm comfortable place. Your mind feels at ease and your body nicely relaxed. You close your eyes and drift off into another world where you feel safe, cosseted and calm. In what seems like a blink of an eyelid you’re suddenly aware of your dentist looking down on you, pleased with his finished work and you sit up feeling amazed that you’ve accomplished what you’ve been putting off for several months, getting a dental implant.
This probably doesn’t sound like the usual idea of a visit to the dentist, but then that’s probably because you’re one of the millions of people who are frightened of visiting their dentist or who have an acute phobia. The good news is that whether you’re considering a dental implant in Richmond, or some other form of dental treatment, modern day dentists can help you overcome your fears with conscious sedation.
So what exactly is conscious sedation?
Conscious sedation is a method of relaxing a patient so that they feel drowsy and totally unaware of any treatment being carried out, yet are still able to co-operate with the dentist. Here at Sheen Dental we use IV sedation which is administered with an injection either in the arm or back of your hand. Depending on the length of time that your treatment will take to complete will decide the amount of dose that we give you. The effects of the sedative take some time to wear off so you will need to be accompanied to the clinic, since you will not be able drive, operate machinery or drink alcohol during this time.
Other things to help
We can also help put nervous patients at ease and relax them by offering ‘relative analgesia’ or what is also referred to as inhalation sedation. Commonly known as “laughing gas” a mix of oxygen and nitrous oxide is breathed in through a simple nose-piece which is comfortable to wear and soon leaves a patient feeling pleasantly relaxed. Our dentist also puts you at ease by talking quietly and suggesting how you might be feeling. Although you may feel a little drowsy, you’ll remain fully conscious but will feel no discomfort from your treatment. The gas is breathed in through a nose-piece which is comfortable to wear and once treatment is completed, it soon leaves your body after just a couple of breaths of ordinary air. There are no side effects and you will be able to drive home after about 15 minutes.
If you’re a nervous patient who desperately wants to get their smile back on track then why not come and talk to us. We’re sympathetic to our patient’s feelings and often suggest conscious sedation for treatments, including dental implants. In Richmond, here at Sheen Dental we use conscious sedation on a regular basis and it’s a safe and reliable technique which benefits both the patient and the dentist carrying out the treatment. Why not call us on 020 8876 5277 to schedule a free no obligation consultation where we can discuss your dental options and explain more about conscious sedation techniques.
