There’s a pretty good chance that you’ve heard of dental implants and you might even know someone who has undergone the treatment. However there is still a lot of confusion surrounding them. Here at Sheen Dental we have been offering restorative, preventative and cosmetic dentistry (including dental implants in Richmond) for many years. So to avoid any confusion we thought it best to set out 7 of the top questions on dental implants and give you some answers.
What exactly is a dental implant?
Commonly a dental implant refers to an artificial tooth which is screwed into the jaw line. However it is actually a three part procedure. Firstly the implant itself is the small titanium rod or screw which is attached to the jaw bone. Secondly there is the abutment, which is attached to the implant; and thirdly, a prosthetic crown is fitted over the abutment which provides a natural looking tooth. Implants can be used to replace one tooth, a series of teeth, or even all of your teeth.
What are the benefits of implants?
They look and behave just like your natural teeth and because they are attached into the bone, they don’t require any messy adhesives to secure them in place
Dental implants can restore your facial features, bringing back your smile and your self- confidence
They won’t damage any surrounding healthy teeth
It can be hard to tell the difference between implants and your natural teeth
Unlike with some dentures or braces, you’ll have no problems enunciating words
They give you the ability to pursue an active lifestyle whilst eating the types of food that you like.
How successful are dental implants?
Post surgery, the success or failure of dental implants depend very much on the patient and their oral after care. In most cases where the client has utilised regular and proper cleaning then success rates generally run at between 95% and 97%.
Who is available to have implants?
Almost anyone who has missing, cracked, or chipped teeth is able to have the treatment. Age is generally no barrier and implant surgery has been known to give older patients a new and more confident lease of life.
Are there any restrictions?
When it comes to dental implants in Richmond, here at Sheen Dental there are very few restrictions. However in the interests of the patient we would have to think twice about offering the treatment to someone that has uncontrollable diabetes, certain cancers, has had radiotherapy around the jaw area, or drinks and smokes to excess.
How long do implants last?
If fitted correctly then the longevity of a dental implant depends upon the patient. If a good standard of oral care is maintained, then there’s no reason why implants shouldn’t last for the rest of a patient’s life.
Is the surgery itself painful?
Although like many surgical procedures there is some pain associated with it, patients are often surprised at how little pain they feel especially when under sedation. There may also be a dull ache as the new implants settle in during post care, but in most cases an aspirin or paracetamol will help.
