Types of implants explained
Whether you undergo dental implants in Richmond, or anywhere else in the country you may or may not know that implants really are precision items that have many special qualities. This is often reflected in the price. However although most are made from the same material (titanium) there are different types of implants, so with this in mind, let’s take a look!
Titanium has an amazing ability to attract bone tissue in such a way that fusion or merging takes place naturally. This is a unique process known as osseointegration and is vital to implant success. A variety of engineering tricks are administered in order to make this happen faster. Implants with acid-edging, grit blasting and plasma coating are all used to aid the osseointegration process.
The endosteal implant
These are the most popular type of implant and are so called because they are placed directly into the bone using a screw-like rod. They come in a variety of widths and lengths and in order for the implant to succeed the bone itself needs to be both wide enough and deep enough to create a good and solid foundation. Once attached they can either be buried under the gum and exposed again in a second surgical procedure, or alternatively they can remain above the gum line.
If you are being treated for dental implants in Richmond and your jaw bone is too thin, then a Ramus-Frame implant can be used. It sits in the back corner of the mouth and is embedded into the jawbone at a place where there is usually sufficient bone. As the tissue heals a thin metallic bar is visible around the perimeter of the gum upon which a series of prosthetic crowns or dentures sit.
Blade form implants
Used less frequently than the endosteal implants they consist of flat rectangles of metal complete with metal prongs. The implant is placed into the jaw where the prongs protrude uppermost into the mouth. These become the basis or supports for the bridge or crown.
