The Sonic Toothbrush and How It Can Prolong The Life of Your Dental Implant

Whether you invest in dental implants in Richmond, or anywhere else in the UK, dental hygiene is key to the longevity of your implants. One way to protect your implants is regular brushing, two or three times a day. However more recently sonic toothbrushes have seen an upsurge in sales and are known to give an even more thorough clean; but what exactly are they and how do they work?

Most electric toothbrushes on the market today give you somewhere between 2500 – 7000 strokes per minute and although this creates more cleaning power that a conventional non-electric toothbrush, this pales into insignificance when you compare it to the 30,000 -40,000 strokes per minute of the sonic toothbrush.

So how exactly does it work?

Generally speaking, ordinary and standard electric toothbrushes utilise a typical scrubbing action. A sonic toothbrush on the other hand, is able to also produce a secondary cleaning action known as vibration. Because of the intense speed of the brush head this vibration or oscillation agitates the fluid or saliva surrounding the teeth which then dislodges excess dental plaque from the surface of the teeth. Similarly to when you throw a stone in the water, the force spreads out from the centre, the reaction from the toothbrush works in the same way and can occur up to 4mm away from where the bristles of the brush head can actually reach. This makes it the perfect solution for getting into those hard-to-reach-places, in and around your dental implants.

Just how effective are they?

Although you can’t say that sonic toothbrush technology is 100 % effective in getting rid of all bacteria, tests have proven that they do far exceed that of regular cleaning and when you consider that a sonic toothbrush can produce around 100 brush strokes for every one stroke of a conventional toothbrush it’s easy to understand why. In fact it’s estimated that a sonic toothbrush can remove around 95% of plaque and bacteria from a dental implant. In Richmond, Sheen Dental deal with all types of preventative, cosmetic and restorative dentistry including implants and as such, know the importance of keeping your teeth bacteria free.

Hopefully after reading this you’ll have a greater understanding of just how a sonic toothbrush can help with the longevity of your dental implants.
