The Importance of the Sinus Lift Procedure

When it comes to dental implants in Richmond, Sheen Dental have been offering patients the very best service for many years, using the very latest techniques. Sometimes, in order to undertake the process, a sinus lift may have to be carried out prior to the placing of the implants. This is particularly true when the implants are needed in the back upper jaw.

So why is this?

Sinuses are basically cavities inside the skull and when teeth become broken or lost, the bone surrounding this area starts to recede. This often causes the sinus cavity to expand into the tooth area. When this happens, there won’t be enough room for the implant to be attached. For this reason the sinus cavity has to be lifted up in order to return the level of the sinus floor to a height that’s sufficient enough to attach the implant. This type of surgery is normally performed under local anaesthetic and the skilled team at Sheen Dental carry out this type of procedure on a regular basis.

So how does it work?

The sinus cavity is accessed via an insertion in the gum situated at the back upper jaw. Once accessed the membrane of the sinus will be carefully lifted back to its original position and a new sinus floor is created using bone grafting techniques. This can be done using a bone substitute or alternatively healthy bone can be taken from other parts of your body. The new sinus floor is then stitched into place. This will then need time to heal before the attachment of a dental implant. In Richmond, Sheen Dental will closely monitor the patient after surgery to ensure sufficient healing time is taken before the next stage of the process can go ahead. Normally this is around 2-3 months.

After the procedure

Immediately after the sinus lift operation, it’s normal to expect a small amount of swelling, bruising and slight discomfort in the affected area. However the area should return to normal after a short amount of time. Painkillers and antibiotics are often prescribed to help the patient through this time.

This procedure is not needed in every dental implant case but it’s good to know that in Sheen Dental, you have a highly experienced team under Dr Harmit Kalsi who will make sure that every  opportunity is taken in order for your dental implants to succeed.
