How Soon Can I Go Back To Work After Dental Implant Surgery?

If you’re considering a dental implant in Richmond or elsewhere in the country then one of your main concerns may be how much time you need to take away from the office following your surgery.

Dental Implants Richmond

Although a dental implant procedure does involve oral surgery, at Sheen Dental the procedure is carried out here on site, and takes just a few hours and involves an anaesthetic and/or sedation. Most of our patients are surprised at how quick the actual surgery is, and even more surprised at just how quick the recovery process is. Patients can normally eat a meal of soft food later in the day and many return to work within a couple of days.

Each individual is different however, and the specifics of the procedure will depend on each person’s particular case. Dr. Harmit Kalsi will be able to advise as to whether there are any particular circumstances such as a bone graft or sinus lift, which might mean a longer period of recovery for you.

Post operative care, however, could interfere a little with your regular routine but it’s of the utmost importance that you follow your surgeon’s instructions so as to minimise the risk of infection or any other problems that could arise. As an example, if you are prescribed a course of antibiotics then you need to be sure of completing the full course. It’s also very important to follow the oral hygiene instructions that have been given to by the dental hygienist or surgeon. This may mean that you have to alter your technique of brushing and flossing at the implant site from either a few days to several weeks following surgery, but this is vital to the success of your implant.

You’ll also have to schedule several appointments with the dental clinic so that the progress of osseointegration (where the bone fuses with the titanium implant post) can be carefully monitored. This procedure can vary for each individual and takes anywhere from six weeks to three months but it’s imperative that this has taken place effectively before moving on to the next stage of the implant procedure.

The majority of patients can return to work a few days after surgery and provided you follow the surgeon’s post-operative instructions to lessen the risk of complications, then there’s every chance that you’ll be resuming your normal routine in next to no time at all.
