Degrees Of Pain Control For Dental Implant Surgery

Whether you’re about to undergo (or are considering) dental implants in Richmond, or indeed anywhere else in the country it’s quite common for many patients to be in the dark about how much pain to expect from the process. So from our wealth of experience here at Sheen Dental and our dealings with hundreds of implant patients, here’s a rough breakdown of what you should expect

Basic implant surgery – No bone grafts, ridge splitting and no sinus lifts

The patient will feel no pain during the surgical procedure and the recuperation period is around 2 days with mild soreness around the gum area. Many people return to work the very next day without even having to take an aspirin.

More complex cases – 3-4 implants or 2 implants and extras such as bone grafting, ridge splitting or sinus lifts

Surgical sedation is recommended but the patient will feel no pain during the surgical process. The recuperation period is normally around 3-10 days depending upon the person and their circumstances. For some patients they may only experience slight post op soreness whereas for others they may have to take a course of pain killers and suffer slight bruising and swelling. It’s fair to point out that in fairer skinned patients sometimes the bruising can be quite noticeable.

Complex surgery – 14-16 implants and block bone grafting

During surgery sedation is strongly recommended, but again the patient will feel no pain at all (no really!). Recuperation is somewhere between 7-14 days with patients experiencing a slight soreness around the gum area and moderate swelling. Pain killers will probably be needed for the first week at least. Post operative bruising in fair skinned patients can appear widespread so any ladies may need to invest in a good concealer before they arrive for surgery.
