Here at Sheen Dental we’re a private clinic who have been fitting dental implants in Richmond for many years and one of the questions we’re often asked is can I get dental implants done on the NHS? The answer we give is that it often depends on the circumstances. The reason we say this is that in order for an individual to be fitted with dental implants the NHS state that there has to be a ‘clear medical need’. So this leads to the obvious question…. what factors do the NHS class as a ‘clear medical need’?

The NHS have strict guidelines to define this ‘need’ but in essence anyone who has been involved in an accident resulting in missing teeth or has received facial trauma through no fault of their own should be entitled to dental implant treatment. In addition anyone who has suffered illness such as oral cancer may also be entitled. Also any person who cannot wear dentures might also be potentially eligible, but remember there has to be a clear medical reason. Another prime example is a person who has been born with congenital defects such as a cleft lip or pallet. Finally if a person is below the age of forty and has lost most or all of their teeth, then they may also be eligible for treatment.
Determining patient eligibility
The NHS base their reasons for eligibility on three main groups of people. Firstly those who have no teeth in either one or indeed both jaws. The second group is those who require replacement of the soft or hard tissue in the skull or facial regions and the third group is those who still have teeth in place but suffer a medical condition.
In addition to this there are also a number of medical factors which need to be taken into consideration. Criteria such as overall general health, age and life expectancy of the patient, lifestyle factors such as smoking and drinking, and a presence of healthy bone may all be deciding factors in whether or not a patient is eligible for dental implant treatments on the NHS.
Even if patients don’t qualify for treatment, the good news is that many private clinics are making it more affordable for patients by spreading the payment costs over a number of months. Here at Sheen Dental for example, we offer a variety of payment plans and finance options to all our patients who are wishing to undergo a dental implant in Richmond.
