Are Dental Implants Okay For Teenagers?

Dental implants have seen a huge surge in popularity and are generally regarded as being the best method of replacement for missing teeth or teeth that are damaged or badly decayed. However, one factor that can have an effect on a person looking for dental implants in Richmond, or elsewhere in the country is a person’s maturity. In this case we mean mature in the sense that growth has stopped and in particular the jawbones have finished growing. Although we understand that teenagers feeling insecure in their appearance may be begging to have a damaged tooth replaced with a dental implant, we feel we should advise patients that it is better to wait.

The reason we say to wait is because natural teeth move and grow as the jawbone continues to grow, whereas dental implants can’t do this. Natural teeth can move and shift their position as the jawbone matures but this is impossible with a dental implant that is fused in one position to the bone. Should an implant be fitted into a jawbone that is not fully mature then as the jaw continues to grow, the implants would appear to sink and get left behind as the neighbouring teeth and jawbone grow harmoniously together.

Although it can be difficult to know exactly when a teenager has stopped growing, it is considered best to wait until the jaw has fully developed and matured. Here at Sheen Dental we use specialist X rays and CT scans to examine the anatomy of the mouth and jaw, which can help to determine if the jaw is fully grown. In addition details of the family history, genetics and age are all factors to be considered so that we have a better idea of when implants can be placed.

Dental implants are a permanent solution to a tooth problem, and therefore shouldn’t be considered until growth is complete. Imagine how devastated your child would feel if after having their smile restored with a dental implant, a couple of years down the line as the jaw continued to grow, people were to notice gaps appearing between the implants and the adjacent teeth. Many of us here are parents, and we know how children can wear you down when they want something. However, trust us, by waiting until the late teen or early adulthood, your child can be rewarded with a beautiful smile that will last for many years if cared for properly.
