The benefits of visiting an orthodontist as an adult

Treatment from an orthodontist is not just for children or teenagers. At Sheen Dental in Richmond we offer orthodontic treatment to patients of all ages. One of the main barriers to teeth straightening treatment for adults is the belief that they will have to wear fixed metal braces. However, this is not the case. At our Richmond dental practice we offer a number of subtler ways to improve the alignment of your teeth.

An increasing number of adults are seeking the help of an orthodontist to improve the position of their teeth. Adults come to Sheen Dental in Richmond for orthodontic consultations for a number of reasons, not all of them aesthetic. As well as boosting self-image and self-confidence, an orthodontist can provide treatments to resolve dental health problems including crowded teeth and poor bite.

Crowded teeth are more difficult to clean, which means that even if you have excellent dental hygiene practices you may experience inflamed, painful and bleeding gums – all symptoms of gum disease. This can result in serious periodontal problems and even tooth loss if left untreated.

Treatment from an orthodontist can stop these problems from worsening, and can even prevent them happening all together. We are strong advocates of preventative dentistry at our Richmond dental practice, and this includes straightening your teeth to improve your dental health.

Options from a Richmond orthodontist

Your Richmond orthodontist can use fixed braces or removable aligners to straighten your teeth. In the case of fixed appliances these can be fast-acting cosmetic appliances designed to correct minor to moderate issues with the front teeth, or more traditional braces made from clear and tooth-coloured components, so nobody needs to know you are having treatment.

We also offer treatment with lingual braces at our Richmond dental practice. These can be used to correct the majority of orthodontic conditions, but will not be noticed as you go about your daily life because they are attached to the rear (or lingual) tooth surfaces.

If you’d prefer a removable appliance, we use Invisalign clear aligners, which fit over the teeth and gently guide them to an improved position.
