The benefits of seeing your hygienist

In order to maintain healthy teeth and gums it is recommended that we see a dentist at least once every six months for a routine appointment. But did you know that it is just as important to see a hygienist as well? If you are based in Richmond and are looking for a hygienist, you will be pleased to know that at our dental practice Sheen Dental, we have an experienced hygienist on board to help our patients with dental hygiene.

The role of a hygienist Richmond

The role of a hygienist Richmond is to prevent a patient from developing tooth decay and periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) which if not treated can lead to bad breath, discolouration and in some cases loss of teeth. Our hygienist Richmond is specially trained to work alongside our dentists in order to provide hygiene treatments which aim to maintain a patient’s healthy teeth and gums.

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease is an infection where a patient’s gum may become swollen, infected or sore. It is usually caused by a build-up of plaque which contains bacteria. Although some bacteria found in plaque is harmless, in some cases when plaque is left to build on a patient’s teeth, it can start to irritate their gums which results in swelling, soreness and sometimes bleeding of the gums.

If the gum disease is not treated early enough, this condition can develop into periodontitis, which affects the tissues that hold together our teeth and supports them. If this condition is not treated, this may damage the bone in your jaw which can eventually lead to your teeth becoming loose and possibly falling out.

If you find that your gums are painful and bleed when you brush your teeth, it is recommended that you book an appointment with us in order for us to assess your teeth and gums and determine the cause.

What to expect at a hygiene treatment at Sheen Dental

When you come to our practice Sheen Dental to see our hygienist, your teeth and gums will firstly be assessed. This is important as it allows the hygienist to determine the build-up of plaque and calculus on your teeth, to identify any other dental issues and highlight any risks.

Our hygienist will then clean your teeth professionally. Known as a ‘scale and polish’, special equipment and pastes are used to remove any staining, whilst also polishing the teeth. This process is usually pain free and our hygienist will ensure that you are as comfortable as possible throughout.

Once this has been done our hygienist will also provide you with advice on how to maintain healthy teeth and gums in order to prevent the plaque from coming back. You will be advised on preventive measures such as how to brush your teeth effectively, the right way to floss and also how to use interdental brushes.

By regularly visiting a hygienist, you reduce the risk of developing tooth decay and losing a tooth and you are able to ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy along with preventing bad breath.
