Brushing up on how you could benefit from a hygienist in Richmond

Dental revolution

Over the past few years, we at Sheen Dental have witnessed a vast peak in dental engagement across all age demographics. Whilst in the past a trip to the dentist was seen as something akin to being sent 'down the mines', today it is something which is actively encouraged and promoted by people of all ages. Speculation over the reasoning for this recent spike in dental engagement and awareness credits the increase in social media usage, and the rise in photographic documentation of our daily lives. Others feel that the smiles which are presented to us through films, television, and the media could be another persuading factor behind the rise. Whatever the rationale is, here at Sheen Dental we could not be happier as more and more people are waking up to how they could benefit from the services of our hygienist in Richmond, to achieve a cleaner, healthier, and longer lasting smile.

Scaling things down

One of the most popular forms of treatment which people are seeking from our trained and approachable hygienists here at Sheen Dental is a ‘scale and polish’ service. This is a procedure which has been designed to rid a patient's teeth of any superficial stains, and the build-up of plaque or tartar in difficult to reach places. Unlike cosmetic dentistry procedures - which merely aim to improve the overall aesthetics of a patient's teeth - a scale and polsih service aims to preserve the strength and health of a patient's teeth, and prevent issues such as Gingivitis (gum disease) from developing. The process of undertaking a scale and polsih service from us here at Sheen Dental would initially consist of a ‘scrape’ stage, which is when the hygienist removes any build-up of plaque or tartar with an ultrasound scraper, and specialised hand-held dental implements to clean out any difficult to reach places. Thereafter comes the ‘polish’ stage of the procedure, which is when the teeth are polished and any superficial stains or discoloration is eradicated leaving the patient with a squeaky clean, healthy smile. Our hygienists may recommend patients some tips for good oral hygiene and how to keep your smile fresh, thereby avoiding any further trips to the dentist.

Rooting things out

Another key role of our hygienists here at Sheen Dental is the examination and identification of any signs of Gingivitis, or gum disease. Gingivitis is the most common reason for tooth loss in adults across the county, and often can be easily avoided if patient's maintain good oral hygiene and recognise warning signs. Signs of Gingivitis are typically inflammation and redness of the gums. One of the most recognisable signs of Gingivitis is spitting blood when brushing. If left untreated, Gingivitis will develop into a condition known as periodontitis, which is when the bone and root of the patient's tooth becomes inflamed and infected, and can often lead to tooth loss. However, through regular checks by our trusted and professional dental hygienists here at Sheen Dental, patients can ensure that any early signs of gum disease are recognised and promptly treated before they can develop further.
