What does my dentist class as general dentistry?

General dentistry is the practice of maintaining oral health, and making repairs to your teeth from the results of decay or damage. It is important to get your teeth looked at regularly by booking check-ups, so you can make sure that your teeth are as healthy as they can be. If you are looking for a regular dentist in Richmond, then Sheen Dental has a fantastic team and range of facilities at your disposal. At Sheen Dental, we consider our patients to be of the utmost importance and want to ensure that you are being treated in the most professional and caring way possible.

Cavities

One of the main combatants of general dentistry is the emergence of cavities. Cavities are caused when the tooth begins to decay, due to acids being produced on the teeth. These acids come about due to poor hygiene, as food and sugars are left on the teeth for the bacteria to thrive in. This is what produces the acids and subsequently rots the teeth.

To avoid cavities, it is best to brush at least twice a day, and floss at least once a day, in order to ensure that all plaque is kept at bay. If you want a deeper clean, or something that is more precise, then it is a good idea to invest in some interdental brushes to help with the brushing process. If you are looking for a dentist in Richmond who can give you advice on your brushing habits, then please speak to us about your situation.

What happens if a cavity is left untreated?

If a cavity is left untreated, and the conditions remain the same, then the conditions of the cavity will not improve, and will in fact worsen. The decay will continue to eat into the tooth and will begin to hurt as the dentine is exposed. This is when most toothaches occur and is the best time to see us about it, as we will be able to reduce the damage being done to the tooth.

If the cavity is left beyond this point, it will continue to eat into the tooth, until it reaches the pulp chamber. This is where the small cavity can turn into a much larger problem.

Dental Pulp & Root Canal

Dental pulp is the soft bundle of tissue and nerves inside the tooth, and is what supplies the tooth with nutrients. If a cavity breaches the pulp chamber, this is when the pulp can become infected. This can be extremely painful and means that the tooth can no longer be saved with a simple filling; a root canal will be needed.

A root canal is when the pulp of the tooth is removed entirely, removing any infection and taking care of the remaining enamel. Once the pulp has been removed, a filler substance is added in order to plug the tooth up and secure it from any further infection. Time is of the essence when it comes to tooth pain, and if you need a dentist in Richmond to assess you for any tooth-ache, then do not hesitate to contact us.
