The Disadvantages of Dental Implants

Although we are seeing a huge rise in the number of patients having dental implants in Richmond, here at Sheen Dental we like to educate our patients before carrying out any type of dental treatment and this includes discussing any disadvantages that the treatment incurs. Like anything, dental implants have their pros and cons, so let’s take a look at the cons.

Cost

The cost of the dental implant procedure is probably the main disadvantage that people talk about with questions such as “how much do dental implants cost” and “What’s the cost for a bone graft” being two of the most commonly asked questions we receive here at Sheen Dental. Our dental implant and grafting costs are very affordable given the fact that you are receiving first class treatment from a highly experienced dental team and when you consider an implant has the potential to last a lifetime if cared for properly, then it puts any price into perspective. Naturally the cost for each individual will differ according to the complexity of their particular dental implant needs.

Surgical procedure

Another disadvantage is that a dental implant requires surgery since it has to be placed into the bone. No surgery is without risks. Complications with dental implant surgery on average amount to between 5-10% and include such things as infection, damage to other teeth, prolonged bleeding, jaw fracture, damaged nerves, and delayed bone healing. Here at Sheen Dental we’ve had many years of experience and complications are few and far between, although recognising them and knowing how to treat them quickly and effectively is key.

Restoration replacement

At some point your tooth or teeth may have to be replaced. If you wear implant retained dentures with a full set of plastic teeth then these will eventually wear out and have to be replaced. A porcelain crown can also get chipped or break. The teeth that are placed on top of implants are no different from those teeth without implants. The key to minimising any dental work is a good design, a good lab, and early diagnosis, which are all things we excel at in Sheen Dental; it’s true to say that experience counts.

Implants take time to integrate with the bone

Although in some cases immediate dental implants are possible the majority of dental implants in Richmond take between 3 and 4 months to complete. The reason for this is that bone heals slowly and if you happen to need bone grafting prior to a dental implant, then this will slow up the process and your treatment time may take as long as 18 months.

So it’s true that there are disadvantages to the dental implant process but the pros far outweigh the cons. Overall it’s a long term benefit for what is a relatively short term sacrifice. Implants are the best option for most people who have lost teeth.
