Just How Do You Choose The Right Electric Toothbrush

If you’ve recently undergone or are seriously thinking of being fitted with dental implants in Richmond, you’ll probably already be aware of the importance of maintaining good levels of oral hygiene. One way you might want to achieve this is by using an electric toothbrush.

Since it’s introduction in the 1960’s the electric or power toothbrush has undergone many changes in shape, style, design and ability. This includes rotation and oscillation and even sonic vibration. As a result if you want to purchase one today, then chances are that you’ll be overwhelmed by the vast array of choice on the market. So what should you look for? Here are some pointers to help you make up your mind.

Sonic toothbrushes

The sonic toothbrush differs from your standard electric toothbrush in that it oscillates much faster. As a rule of thumb a sonic toothbrush can deliver somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000 strokes per minute, whereas an electric toothbrush delivers somewhere between 4,000 – 8,000. This is still pretty quick when you compare it to a hand held toothbrush which only manages around 300 strokes per minute. So is speed really important when looking for the best electric toothbrush? Well yes and no! A sonic toothbrush has the ability to remove plaque and debris up to 4 mm away from where the brush head actually is. This is because as it oscillates at an intense speed, the motion stimulates saliva. This in turn acts like a ripple effect and reaches out to remove debris beyond where the brush head is touching. The obvious advantages of this are that they can reach areas of trapped debris that other toothbrushes wouldn’t be able to reach. The disadvantages are that they may be too powerful for those which sensitive gums. Instead a good electric toothbrush with a relatively small head may be the answer. You can also buy models with built in pressure sensors which monitor when you’re brushing too hard.

What about the bells and whistles?

Nowadays electric toothbrushes come with all different unique selling points that suggest that they stand out from their competitors. For instance some have timers that beep every 30 seconds letting you know you should be changing sides when brushing. Others sound an alert after 2 minutes (the recognised brushing time) has elapsed. However all bells and whistles aside, there really is nothing to suggest that one performs better than the other. Therefore it pays to think about what works best for you.

What about practicalities?

On any power/sonic toothbrush, the heads are replaceable. This being the case each member of the family should have their own head and these should be changed roughly every 3 months. With practicality in mind, you might want to think about how easy it is to get hold of replacements and how much they cost. Also if the motor/base unit is for family use, then you might want to think about the weight and the grip. Is it good for children, or for those with arthritis? Finally how long do you want it to last off charge? Ideally it should deliver roughly 1 week’s worth of brushing in between charges.

So there you have it. Hopefully this has given you the relative information so that you can go out and buy with confidence.
