Is Gingivitis Really Preventable?
When it comes to undergoing dental implants in Richmond, you’ll probably know that in order for them to be successfully placed, your mouth needs to be healthy. This means being free from (amongst other issues) gingivitis.
Gingivitis is in fact the earliest form of gum disease and is an inflammation of the gums. While not particularly problematic at this stage, if left untreated it can develop into full blown gum disease known as periodontitis. This can lead to a loss of gum tissue, loss of bone supporting the tooth root and eventually… the loss of the tooth itself. The good news is that gingivitis is relatively easily treated, but better still, it’s 100% preventable.
So what causes it?
When bacteria is allowed to accumulate on the gums following poor oral hygiene it forms plaque. This then attacks the gums causing them to become red and swollen. The usual give away sign that you have some form of gingivitis is that there are traces of blood when you brush your teeth. Ironically, many people choose to ignore this problem simply because it isn’t painful.
Okay so how is it fully preventable?
The one sure-fire way to prevent gingivitis from ever occurring is to practice good oral health habits such as regular and thorough brushing and flossing, as well as regular use of a good antiseptic mouthwash. Combine this with regular trips to your local dental clinic and you shouldn’t have a problem.
Are some people more prone to gingivitis than others?
In essence yes! Studies have found that those who smoke, pregnant or menopausal women, or those who suffer from diabetes or from poor nutrition are more likely to develop gingivitis. This is why it’s especially important in these people to practice the highest standards of oral hygiene.
