How Exactly Do Dental Implants Work?

If you’re about to lose a tooth to extraction or you have a gap where a tooth has fallen out then you are probably considering all of your options to replace it. One solution which is rapidly growing in popularity is a dental implant. In Richmond, here at Sheen Dental we place dental implants on a regular basis and get much pleasure from the great feedback that we receive from our patients with many saying that implants have changed their lives for the better.

The question that we’re often asked is how do dental implants work, so we thought we’d post a short blog on this particular subject. A dental implant is similar to a tooth root. Usually made from titanium it’s placed directly into the socket where the missing tooth once was. Titanium is the choice of metal for the implant because it has the ability to fuse with the surrounding bone and consequently forms a strong platform on which a crown can be placed. This is the visible part which looks just like a natural tooth. Dental implants can be used to support a single tooth, several teeth or even a denture. It acts just like a natural tooth root would and prevents the loss of bone which occurs when a tooth is missing and which continues to diminish even when traditional dentures or bridges are worn. Implants are also resistant to decay because they are made from titanium and if cared for correctly they have the potential to last a lifetime.

Dental implants are usually left for several months to heal whilst the bone fusion (osseointegration) process takes place. This can take several months and varies from one individual to another. Here at Sheen Dental we use state-of-the-art 3D scanners to check the depth of your bone and to see just how strong it is before inserting implants.

In some cases where teeth have been missing for some while there may not be sufficient bone in which to place an implant but often we can grow bone back to make implant placement a possibility. This is commonly done using a bone graft and often this is in the upper jaw which tends to lose bone faster than the lower jaw. This is done by placing a small amount of bovine bone or synthetic material under the gum and leaving it to heal for a few months. It will eventually fuse with your natural bone and create sufficient depth for an implant to be placed.

In order for dental implants in Richmond or anywhere else in the UK to be successful a patient must have a good standard of oral hygiene to begin with and this needs to be maintained during and after the implant process. People at risk of failure with dental implants include those with uncontrolled diabetes, poor health, or smokers.
