How Dental Implants Can Help With Missing Teeth Problems

If you’ve experienced missing teeth you’ll be pleased to know that you have a selection of options open to you, one of which are dental implants. In Richmond, here at Sheen Dental we’ve been successfully fitting them for many years and although they are often used for replacing single teeth, they also have other uses too.

Dental Implants Richmond

So what exactly are dental implants?

Dental implants have the ability to replace the form as well as the function of missing teeth. In essence they are small titanium screws which are secured or fastened into the jaw bone. This then acts as a replacement for the missing natural tooth root and over time will merge and fuse with the natural bone to produce a super strong platform upon which to attach a porcelain crown.

The main difference between dental implants and removable dentures and bridges is that they are self supporting which means that they don’t rely on fixatives, glues (or in the case of bridges) your natural teeth, to keep them in place. As a result they can also be used for a whole host of missing teeth solutions. Here are some examples:

Bridging support

Standard bridges rely thoroughly on the support of natural teeth either side of the gap to support the crown. These then have to be filed down and re-shaped to fit the support. The problem is that because they have been re-shaped then they are often more prone to tooth decay and disease. If two or three consecutive teeth are missing then an implant or implants can be placed which will then solely support the bridge, thus negating the need for any restructuring of natural and healthy teeth.

Denture support

As well as single tooth bridges, if you opt for a dental implant in Richmond then here at Sheen Dental we can also use implants to support existing dentures. This means no more worrying about them becoming loose or rubbing, and no more having to watch what you eat. Even if you have zero teeth on either the top or bottom row, we can strategically place implants that can then hold a set of dentures. This means that you don’t have to have implants placed in every gap which can be both extremely costly and time consuming. Instead implant supported dentures may be the best option.
