Exploring The Differences Between Dental Implants and Dental Bridges
Here at Sheen Dental we’ve been fitting dental implants in Richmond for many years and one of the most common questions we hear is “What’s the main difference between implants and a dental bridge?” Whilst they’re both classed as permanent, non-removable replacements for missing teeth and visually have little difference between them, there are subtle differences. Let’s take a look
How they’re fixed
Probably the biggest and most significant difference between implants and bridges is the way that they’re fixed into place. Both have the ability to alleviate bite stress, help maintain facial shape, restore your smile, allow you to speak clearly and above all, look natural. However a dental bridge is bonded directly onto surrounding teeth for support. This does have the advantage over dental implants in that it can be fixed immediately and without any surgical procedure, but the down-sides of this are that the adjacent teeth have to be shaped or ground down to be able take the supports for the ‘bridging’ tooth.
On the flip side, dental implants are fitted by securing them directly into the jaw bone and this process does require a surgical procedure. Once fitted, implants don’t rely on the support of adjoining teeth to keep them in place and are classed as ‘stand-alone’ replacements. Depending upon the individual, the procedure for fitting a dental implant in Richmond is often done is stages and can take a number of months to complete. Therefore it’s fair to say that a dental implant isn’t an instant fix solution. That said, once fitted, it’s incredibly strong and durable and can last for many years.
When it comes to costs, the differences are somewhat less than subtle! Prices for a standard dental implant are likely to start at a sum equal to or slightly more than that of a high-end dental bridge. Alternatively, if you visit a top dental implant clinic, then costs can work out one to two thousand pounds more. If you were to base your decision purely on costs alone it does appear to be a bit of a ‘no brainer’. However if you look at the greater picture and consider costs versus value, a well-fitting dental implant has longevity on its side and can last 2-5 times as long. Because of this it’s often considered the more cost-effective long-term solution and therefore the better treatment.
