Exploring the Commonly Asked Questions about Dental Implants
For many men and women who are suffering with broken or missing teeth, undergoing dental implant treatment can result in getting back that beautiful smile and regaining some much needed self confidence. However prior to the end result, there are many steps involved in getting the patient to that point. Here at Sheen Dental, our highly experienced team have been fitting dental implants in Richmond for many years and we advise people to find out as much as they can before undergoing the procedure. With this in mind, here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions pertaining to dental implants.
What exactly is a dental implant?
Fashioned from titanium an implant is designed specifically to be attached into the jaw bone where they act just like the root of a normal tooth. It can be used to support a variety of crowns, bridges or dentures and because of it’s composition, is lightweight, non allergenic and has an ability to fuse with bone tissue, making it very strong.
What are the advantages over more traditional forms of teeth replacement?
Dental prosthetics such as dentures, crowns and bridges do provide an adequate replacement for broken or missing teeth, but they each have their drawbacks. They may weaken other teeth, they may require the person to retrain the way that they speak and eat, and they may also need regular replacement. A well fitting implant on the other hand acts just as your normal teeth would and gives stable long lasting support allowing the user to eat and speak with confidence and ease. In addition, unlike bridges, they don’t rely on support from surrounding teeth, thus giving the patient all-round better oral health. They can also be a permanent solution, lasting a life time if cared for properly.
How do I know if I’m a candidate for implant surgery?
It’s fair to say that the majority of people are candidates for a dental implant. In Richmond for example, here at Sheen Dental, we’ve treated people of all ages. However, there are specific criteria that do need to be met. Here are some of those…
Good standard of oral health – A patent needs a good standard of oral health for implants to be successful. So if there are signs of gum disease, then this needs to be treated before implant surgery can begin.
Don’t smoke or drink to excess – Both nicotine and alcohol are known to slow down the process of bone fusion which is needed to create a strong platform for the prosthetic teeth, so if you drink and smoke to excess, you may be refused treatment.
Don’t suffer from uncontrollable diabetes – These acts in the same way as nicotine and alcohol does and will slow down the bone growth, whilst at the same time weaken the existing bone.
Good quality and quantity of jaw bone -For patients without sufficient surrounding bone, then the placement of the implants can prove difficult. If this is the case, then the surgeon may look at bone grafting to ensure better implantation.
Are implants guaranteed to succeed? As with any form of surgery it can never be 100% guaranteed. However, this type of procedure has been extensively tested over a number of years and as such, patients have experienced a 90-95% success rate and can therefore expect long-term success if their implants are cared for properly.
