Dental Implants – The Modern Solution to Tooth Replacement
Here at Sheen Dental we’ve been fitting dental implants in Richmond with great success for many years. As such all our methods are tailored to the needs of individual patients. For example some of our patients need just a single implant, whilst others require whole rows of missing teeth to be replaced. Dental implants are seen as the modern solution to teeth replacement but are they really all that they’re cracked up to be? Let’s take a look at the alternatives.
In the past, when it came to tooth replacement there was really only one method available and that was dentures. They have been around for centuries in one form or another and their time-tested technology means that for many, they provide a sound solution to missing teeth. They are inexpensive to purchase (especially when you compare them to other methods) and on the whole they do a good job. However they also have their down sides.
Firstly the shelf life of a set of dentures is around 10-15 years at most, so they will need replacing at some stage. Secondly because they sit on the gum line, they don’t stop bone degeneration (known as absorption) and in some instances exacerbate the problem. This is why they need continual adjustment. Thirdly they can be a source of embarrassment and indeed frustration as they often have a tendency to slip if not secured in place. Finally, the cleaning routine is quite demanding and takes some getting used to.
If you have several teeth in a row that are missing, then you may opt for a bridge. Again they are relatively inexpensive compared to other methods and provide patients with a quick fix solution to missing teeth. They do take some getting used to but once worn, users say that they are relatively comfortable.
The main downside to a bridge however is that it relies on the support of nearby healthy teeth which have to be ground down or shaped so that they can support the bridge. This can often leave those teeth open to decay and future root problems.
Okay so what about dental implants?
Firstly, at anywhere between £1000 and £2600 per tooth dental implants clearly aren’t cheap. Nor are they a quick-fix solution. In actual fact the entire process can take 3-9 months to complete and you will have to undergo surgery. However, what they do offer is a near permanent solution to missing teeth, that are about as natural looking and functioning that modern dentistry allows. Cleaning is easy utilising standard regular brushing and flossing and there is no need to take them out at night, no source of embarrassment and no damaging any surrounding teeth.
