Sometimes Dental Implants Aren’t Always Necessary
One of the biggest advances in dentistry over the past 40 years has been dental implants. In Richmond, here at Sheen Dental we are carrying out more dental implant treatments than ever before and it seems set to continue. However, it has been reported in the news that some dental clinics are being over pushy when it comes to recommending dental implants. We’d like to put prospective client’s minds at ease to say that we most definitely do not fit into that category.
Dental implants are great replacements for missing teeth but they’re not necessarily the best choice for damaged or diseased teeth. When it comes to teeth, there is nothing better than a person’s own teeth in regards to fit, function and comfort and whenever we can we will attempt to save the tooth with treatment, and help our patients get to grips with better oral hygiene.
Regular visits to the dentist can do more than keep your smile looking attractive they can also tell a dentist much about a patient’s overall health, including whether you could be developing certain diseases such as diabetes. It has been suggested by new research that the health of a person’s mouth actually mirrors that of their bodily health. A healthy mouth is likely to indicate overall good health and on the flip side, poor oral health may well mean you have other health problems too. It also suggests that good oral health can prevent certain diseases from happening.
Research carried out by the Academy of General Dentistry shows that there is a connection between periodontal (gum) disease and conditions such as strokes and heart disease. Also of concern was the fact that the amount of pre-term, low weight babies was greater in women with gum disease.
Other research showed that oral problems such as mouth ulcers, swollen gums, a dry mouth and prolific gum problems, were apparent in over 90% of systematic diseases such as diabetes, oral cancer, leukaemia, kidney disease, pancreatic cancer and heart disease. Poor oral health can also lead to facial pain, eventual tooth loss and even digestive problems.
