Causes of Dental Implant Failure And Why They Occur
When it comes to undergoing treatment for dental implants in Richmond, or indeed anywhere else in the country you should feel safe in the knowledge that the procedure is successful around 95% of the time. However like all types of surgery there is always that risk of failure, so with this in mind, what are the main causes of dental implant failure and why do they occur?
The integration process or ‘osseointegration’ as it is referred to is an important part of the dental implant procedure. Without it your implants won’t be strong enough to hold the prosthetic tooth. It’s a process whereby healthy bone fuses and merges with the titanium implant to become one super-strong platform upon which to attach the tooth. On some occasions the integration process doesn’t happen or fails. This is usually discovered at the second stage of the procedure when the implant is uncovered by the surgeon and is found to be loose. If this happens it has to be replaced.
In addition non-integration can be discovered fairly early on after initial surgery and this could be due to
Trauma after initial surgery
Smoking – Slows down or halts the healing/bonding process
Implantation into unhealthy or diminished/weakened bone
Titanium allergy – Extremely rare
Implants can also fail years after the initial process. This can be down to poor oral hygiene practices. Similarly to natural teeth, the gum around an implant can become infected with bacteria, and can lead to something called perimplantitis. If this isn’t dealt with then bone loss can occur, thus weakening the implant and eventually causing it to fall out.
On rare occasions the implant may also break over time. This maybe because the patient has an abnormal bite and pressure is being exerted abnormally on to the implant. Generally speaking broken or fractured implants have to be removed as they cannot always be repaired in the mouth.
Here at Sheen Dental we try to make sure that implantation failure is limited by making sure that the patient has sufficient and healthy bone before we start the implant process. We also advise our clients not to smoke for the duration of the healing process and finally we pride ourselves on our after care. Using a combination of regular check-ups and education, we aim to make sure that our patients look after their implants properly.
