3 Important Points to Consider When Getting Dental Implants
Whether you undergo treatment for dental implants in Richmond, or anywhere else in the country it’s not a decision you should take lightly. Although implants are a very effective, long-term alternative to tooth replacement, the process does involve surgery and can take up to 9 months to complete. That said, the popularity of dental implants is indeed growing and as they become more widely known and talked about, then so too does the demand placed on experienced dental implant dentists. However, before you decide that this is the dental treatment for you, here are 3 points that you might want to consider.
Are you a good candidate for dental implants?
Contrary to popular belief there is no real age barrier to having dental implants. Whether you’re 19 or indeed 90, dental implants can have a great impact on your life for all the right reasons. However whilst there is no age barrier, there may well be some underlying issues that may prevent you from having the treatment. For example, anyone who smokes or drinks heavily is unlikely to be able to have dental implants. The same goes for anyone with uncontrollable diabetes and certain cancers of the mouth and face. If on the other hand you suffer from gum disease or degenerating jaw bone tissue through previous bad oral health issues, then this doesn’t necessarily prevent you from having the treatment. Instead bear in mind that the dental problems will need to be dealt with first, before any implants can be fitted.
Understand the processes
The whole dental implant process can take months from initial consultation through to final placement and much of this has to do with recovery time between stages. Also unlike other forms of tooth replacement such as dentures and bridges, undergoing fitting for dental implants does involve surgery. As a result (and like all surgical procedures) it’s never guaranteed to be 100% successful. With this in mind, it pays to have an understanding of the different steps involved in the procedure and the risks involved. This is in addition to focusing on the benefits.
Getting a handle on the costs involved
One of the things that puts many people off about having dental implants is the costs involved. There’s no hiding the fact that they are indeed expensive and can cost anything up to £2600 per tooth. Much of this is down to the cost of the materials used and the experience of the dental surgeons performing this life-changing procedure. However whilst for some it may be a ‘cost-too-far’ you have to weigh up the pros and cons and take a look at the long term results. Compared to dentures and bridges, implants can last 3 or even 4 times as long and are therefore a near permanent solution to missing teeth. In fact pioneering dental implants placed in the 1960’s and 1970’s are still going strong today.
