What is plaque and why is it the enemy?
In itself, bacterial plaque is harmless. The bacteria don’t cause infection, they just live in your mouth and feed on any sugars knocking around in your saliva. When sugar levels go up, the bacteria proliferate. You will feel them on your teeth with your tongue.
The problem is that these bacteria give off acids and it’s the acids that attack your teeth and gums, eroding the enamel and inflaming the gums, and then getting underneath them to attack the tooth roots and bone that holds your teeth in place.
