Fixed braces:

This is the most traditional type of brace "train tracks", where they are permanently cemented to the teeth for the full duration of treatment. Fixed braces can be metal, clear (ceramic) and lingual. Lingual braces are placed behind the teeth so they are not visible.

Removable braces:
​
These appliances can be removed from the patient's mouth. They come in the form of invisible plastic trays. There are also removable "functional appliances", which are generally used for children's orthodontic treatment. A removable brace or appliance should be worn at all times and only taken out for eating and cleaning.

Patients who have problems with their bite and the way their top and bottom teeth line up against each other are good candidates for orthodontic treatment.

Impressions, photos and x-rays are taken at the start of treatment to determine the course of action.

Brackets are bonded to individual teeth and wires clip onto them that gently guide the teeth into position over time.
