Dental Implants
|
Remember the excitement of
losing a tooth when you were six years old? Well,
that excitement fizzled somewhere on the road to
adulthood. Losing a tooth as an adult is hardly a
cause for celebration. Implants are very strong and solid. With implant-supported teeth, you can talk and laugh without worry that their teeth might slip and you can enjoy eating anything you want with complete confidence. Implant dentistry has advanced to the point that implants can be placed with a high degree of confidence, skill and predictability. In fact, implants have a higher long-term success rate than most other dental restorations. Implants have become an extremely effective and versatile choice in our repertoire here at Sheen Dental. Successfully rehabilitating challenging patient situations has now become a predictable reality During the last 30 years the use of dental implants
has
changed dentistry beyond recognition. Implants are
no
longer considered experimental and it is equally
rare
to come across situations where they cannot be used
at all.

What is a dental implant?
|
A
dental implant is essentially a substitute for a
natural root
and commonly it is screw or cylinder shaped. Each
implant is
placed into a socket carefully drilled at the
precise location of
the intended tooth. If an implant has a screw-thread
on its
outer surface it can be screwed into position and if
it does not,
it is usually tapped into place. The main aim during
installation
of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact
with the
surrounding bone. This creates an initial stability,
which over
time is steadily enhanced by further growth of bone
into
microscopic roughnesses on the implant surface. |

Dental Implant Benefits:
Other benefits of implants include:
- Feel — Because implants are imbedded in your bone, they feel more like your natural teeth than bridges or dentures.
- Convenience — You will not need to worry about denture adhesives or having your dentures slip, click or fall out when you speak.
- Nutrition — You will be able to chew better with implants. Chewing can be difficult with regular dentures, especially ones that don't fit perfectly. A regular upper denture also covers your palate, which can reduce your sense of taste.
- Self-esteem — Because implants are so much like your natural teeth, you will think about them less. Your self-esteem and confidence will be improved because you will not have to worry about denture problems or people noticing that you have missing teeth. Regular dentures also can affect your speech, which can make you less self-confident when talking with others.
