So Why Use Titanium in a Dental Implant?

There’s no getting away from the fact that whether you undergo a dental implant in Richmond, or indeed anywhere else in the country, it is not going to be cheap. In fact on average it costs somewhere between £900 and £2000 per tooth depending upon the treatment needed. One of the main reasons for this is that implants are designed using an expensive metal known as titanium. So why use titanium in a dental implant? Let’s take a look…

Dental Implants Richmond

Non-Corrosive

Titanium is one of the few metals that can withstand attacks from acid (found in saliva), fluorine (a major component found in many tooth cleaning products), and chlorine (found in water). Moreover it also develops a protective oxide layer when the metal comes into contact with oxygen, making it the perfect material for use in surgical procedures.

Strength and durability

Did you know that when we chew we exert around 200lbs of pressure which bears down directly on the tooth? Therefore, whatever material is used in a dental implant it has to be super-strong. This being the case, titanium is about as tough and durable as it gets. Titanium doesn’t bend, warp or buckle and given the same weight ratio, is stronger than most other metals including pressed-steel. Finally and without getting too technical, titanium has a very low density structure, which makes it extremely lightweight resulting in material that’s simply perfect for use with implants.

Bio-compatibility

One of the most amazing facts about titanium and perhaps the thing that sets this metal apart from any other is that bone tissue loves it! So much so in fact that when inserted into the bone, then overtime a process of osseointegration occurs. This is a process where bone tissue fuses and merges with the titanium implant to become one. When this happens it creates a rock-solid foundation upon which to place the prosthetic crown.

Given what we now know, it’s understandable then why titanium is used in the implant process.
