Just How Long Does Dental Implant Treatment Take?

Unlike any other form of missing teeth replacement, it’s fair to say that whether you opt for standard dental implants in Richmond or anywhere else in the country, they’re not going to be fitted and completed in one day. The reason for this is simple….they need healing time.

So why are implants different from standard dentures?

Dental Implants Richmond

When standard removable dentures are fitted they sit on top of the gum line and are held in place by fixatives or glue. As a result they don’t require any form of surgery and generally, you can have your new teeth fitted in just one day. With dental implants on the other hand, a surgical procedure is required as the titanium rods which serve to support the false teeth are actually secured down into the jaw bone itself. Usually performed under conscious sedation the procedure itself is pain free and offers patients a long term solution to missing teeth

The recovery period

The other important factor about dental implants is that there needs to be a recovery period whereby a process known as osseointegration takes place. This is vital to the success of dental implants and is where the body’s natural bone tissue merges and fuses with the titanium implant. This union between the surrounding bone tissue and the implant itself is actually stronger than the bond between natural bone and tooth root. This process can take 3-6 months to occur and is vital before the next stage can go ahead. Only when the implant is strong and secure should the abutment and porcelain crown be fitted.

In essence timing is crucial and as such an implant cannot be rushed. In some cases it’s the haste of the surgeon to fit the implants that causes implant failure in the long term. Here at Sheen Dental we’ve been fitting dental implants in Richmond for many years. As such we fully understand that the healing period varies from one individual to another and can never be rushed. Therefore we make sure that all patients are constantly monitored throughout the recovery period to ensure best chances of implant success.
